Producing snus in our factory in Enköping, Sweden, is a labour of Love. These words come from our COO, Maxfield McKinnon, who has been the company during its most intense growth phase. We sat down for a coffee with Maxfield and asked him what snus-making is all about.
When you think of a factory, you might imagine cold steel and ticking clocks. But for Maxfield McKinnon, the COO of Swedish Smokeless Solutions, the air inside our facility smells less like industry and more like a “labour of love.” We sat down with Maxfield to talk about our recent rebranding, the secret to “The Swedish Experience,” and why he believes flexibility is the ultimate superpower.
More than just a name change
Late 2024 and early 2025 marked a massive milestone for us: the transition from GN Tobacco to Swedish Smokeless Solutions. For Maxfield, this wasn’t about a new logo – it was about a new identity.
“The name now reflects who we’ve always been: a solutions provider,” Maxfield explains. “Harm reduction isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s our reality. Cigarettes kill millions of people every year. Our products don’t.”
While the name is fresh, the core mission remains untouched: delivering the absolute highest quality snus and nicotine pouches. As Maxfield puts it, “we’re simply evolving to reach new heights and develop new solutions.”
The Balancing Act
One day, Maxfield is deep in the details of factory maintenance; the next, he’s presenting to Health Canada about the “Swedish Experience” – the global phenomenon of how snus has helped Sweden achieve some of the lowest smoking rates in the world.
How does he switch from “factory leader” to “global ambassador”? “
“It’s a rapid mindset shift,” he admits. “But I’m passionate about both. When you love what you do, the energy to jump from data analysis to operational management comes naturally.”
Scaling with heart
Looking forward to 2026-2027, the demand for nicotine pouches is skyrocketing. But growth brings its own set of challenges. While many companies struggle with logistics, Maxfield points to a more human “bottleneck”: finding the right people.
“As a leading employer in our region, we aren’t just building machines; we’re building a team.” For Maxfield, “responsible growth” means choosing the right path over the easy one, every single time.
When asked about the production process, Maxfield doesn’t hold back. In an industry where “corner-cutting” has become common, Swedish Smokeless Solutions takes the long way.
- The tobacco: It starts with choosing the right types – no compromises.
- The tech: We use the best tools available because perfection has no price tag.
- The sustainability: It’s not a side project; it’s a core constraint in every decision we make.
A glimpse into the future
With their eyes set on North America and Africa, Swedish Smokeless Solutions’ world is getting bigger day by day. When asked how the comp0any manages to scale so effectively into such different markets, Maxfield offers a mysterious smile.
“It’s one of our superpowers. Our competitors are still trying to figure out how we do what we do – let’s keep them guessing for a while!”
The secret, he hints, is flexibility.
“By building a structure that can pivot as fast as global regulations change, we’ve created an operational flow that is “ideal.”
